Do you remember that old 1980’s advert where a guy called Victor Kiam stood on the screen and said “I liked it so much, I bought the company!” ?
Tacky in the extreme, but I think you will agree a superb endorsement of his products. He was talking about the Remington brand of shavers.
Well I never thought that I would ever be saying the same thing, but today... I am!
My company has been operating in the Speed Camera Detection market with some success for a number of years.
When I was introduced to the — what was then — brand new Talex back in 2005, I absolutely loved it.
It was clearly better than a Road Angel in my view, and under half the price.
I started selling it and even recommending it to my clients over my OWN brand of BTST Speed Camera Detectors.
We became Talex’s biggest Independent customer.
To cut a long story short, in September 2007, my company bought Talex.
We immediately re-hired Steve Walsh, the ex-Traffic Policeman who had made the original Talex database of Speed Camera locations the best in the UK, and Richard Ward, one of the two Founding Talex Directors.
Together, with the input of eight other staff members, myself and over £150,000 of investment, we’ve turned the original Talex in to something even more special...
So here is virtually the original review I wrote for the Talex back in 2005.
I’ve obviously updated it a bit to relate to the new features on the new Talex, as well as adding in a couple of new video and audio clips.
But in essence it’s the same.

... I was so impressed by the new Talex that I decided to create this whole page just for this one product! When you read on, you will be able to see the video and audio clips I have created for you to show exactly how the Talex warns in advance you of Speed Cameras and Mobile Police Traps ahead.
It's taken a lot of work to put these video and audio demonstrations together but the Talex is such a neat product that it deserves special attention if you are serious about never getting another speeding fine.
Detector, small enough to take with you in your shirt pocket...
Quality
The way that the new Talex is put together is exquisite. The build quality of the product is better than anything else we have tested, and the functionality is far better than rival top-end products in my opinion.
I can actually make more money by selling products such as the Road Angel because they are more expensive and there is a bigger margin for the retailer.
However, when I started BeatTheSpeedTrap, I only wanted to sell the best and best value Speed Trap Detectors, and I am trying to hold true to that principal by creating this site. I hope that my genuine enthusiasm for the new Talex comes through in this review.
If I was trying to present the Road Angel or another brand as being the best on the market, I wouldn't believe my own words, so could not expect you to!
(note: remember that this was originally written in 2005... for the record, I do now believe that my BTST brand is just as good, it’s just a bit more expensive :-)

How the Talex Warns you
When you are approaching a Speed Camera or a Mobile Police trap site, the Talex warns you exactly 500 yards (457 Meters) in advance. This has proved to be the optimal distance between giving more than enough advanced warning, but not so much that you then forget about the alert!
When you are 500 yards away, it will say:

(It will also specify if the hazard is a Mobile Speed Camera site, an average speed camera zone or a static speed camera).
Then, when you are 200 yards away, the Talex reminds you with a gentle but distinctive tone.
Now, this is the really great bit... If you are travelling at or below the speed limit, you will not be bothered by constant alerts before passing the camera or other hazard. The reason for this is that the Talex knows exactly how fast you are travelling by the satellite technology described in a moment, and what the speed limit is on the road you are on.
If you are not exceeding the limit for the particular road you are on, it leaves you alone. But, if you are going OVER the speed limit in the last 200 yards before the speed trap, the Talex will say:

..and it keeps saying it until you do. This is the best feature of the Talex and in my opinion, is the biggest single factor (apart from the price) that sets it apart from the competition.

Technical Specification
From my 10,000+ miles of testing, the new Talex seems to not only be the most advanced and refined of all the market leading products, but also the easiest to use. Even if you are a ‘technophobe’, you’ll have no problem using it.
When it arrives at your door, you just plug it in to the cigarette lighter in your car, pop it on the dash (or wherever you like) and away you go... It just works!
I’ve talked to Embedded Technology (the owners of Talex) and they told me about how much money and time went in to developing it (they have asked me not to disclose how much money, but believe me, it is a lot!).

This money and time invested in the product and database development really does show. For example, when you want to log a ‘user position’ (a point of interest to you that you would like to be reminded of next time you are driving past), you simply press the ‘user’ button... and that’s it!
No messing about with various options and combinations. It’s so simple to use. If you want to take a position out, next time you are driving past, just press the ‘user’ button again and it’s done.
